three little words

“You have cancer”.

Few words will knock you on your ass faster than those.  Just 2 days after my 52nd birthday, I got this belated “present”.  I’d already had surgery to remove the right half of my thyroid and after 2 weeks of anxious waiting, I got the call.  Now, I would have the other half removed the next day and then radiation treatment.  Talk about scary.  It was time to start praying.

Well, thyroid cancer is one of the most treatable cancers out there.  But, word to the wise, please don’t ever tell someone with thyroid cancer that they’ve got the “easy cancer”.  Easy and cancer should never, ever be spoken in the same sentence.

My kids - my 3 biggest blessings!

After the fear wore off, I thanked God for giving me this wake up call.  I had been wasting my life away – waiting for something good to happen, instead of making something happen or seeing the good that was already there.

I am now doing my best to live life to the fullest, to take care of this body that God gave me and to give thanks for all the beauty in my life.

My new 3 words – I am blessed. . .take it away, Martina!

  • Have I told you how proud I am of you and how honored I am to call you friend? It takes great strength to receive the news, deal with the news and then grow past it enough to be able to share your story of survival. Your story shows that there is good after devastating news. You are one of the blessings in my life.

  • Jeanne

    Susan,
Such a friend as you, everyone should have. Thank you for being a part of my life and always being there for me.

    Jeanne,

Great post. You nailed it with the three new words “I am blessed”. I’ve done a bit of work the past few years supporting the Relay For Life and I have to say that you, along with all of the survivors posess a courage that most of us don’t have and won’t have unless faced with what you’re going through. Keep up the good fight!

  • Yes Jeanne,
Those three words ” I am blessed ” are the most helpful words that can work magic with you .Being an Ayurvedic Vaidya or doctor you may call , i have always seen its not us the doctors that save people .. its the attitude that a person takes when he faces diseases .If you are brave and you are loved , blessed you will enjoy a long happy life , no matter what the medical community labels you .
Keep that smile going on and you will have what you ask ..Good health

    Regards
    Sudeep

  • Jeanne, sometimes what seems to be a horrible thing in our lives (and certainly is, like with cancer) can bring blessings and make us more aware of the beauty in life and what is important. Thank you for sharing this beautiful post!

Jeanne, I am a fellow boomer problogger. You have a great blog. Like the design.

I have never struggled with cancer, but I think you have grabbed hold of the three words that will give you hope. I think you will find that sharing your struggle with others is therapeutic, and in sharing your hope you wil bless them as well.

  • Hi jeanne! I RT’d you this a.m. & then got a message that you are “Following” me on Twitter. And, that brought me to this lovely site! I Love it already! Jo

  • Jeanne

    Jo,
Thanks so much for visiting and your kind remarks. Looking forward to getting to know you better on twitter! :)

Jeanne, just discovered you on Blip and followed your link here. You have a wonderful attitude that’s quite inspirational. I’ll overlook the fact that you are a Steelers fan.

I’ll look for you on twitter (I’m Googlyeyez there).

    Good luck and God Bless.

  • Jeanne

    Phil,
Thanks for visiting my blog! I love music, so I’m just having a blast with you all on Blip! Being a Steelers fan is just a small part of who I am, so I’m glad that you won’t hold that against me – but look out during the season – I may get a little obnoxious! ;)
    Thanks for your kind words,
    Jeanne

  • I am glad that you are well. I found your blog through a Blip.fm tweet on my Twitter acct.

About 18yrs ago, after an MRI, I heard these words:
“You have a brain tumor.” They believed it to be benign. That was scarey. I took all kinds of Meds. And had more MRI’s than I can remember.
And I prayed alot. Mi Mama prayed alot too.
Now it is an empty cella…which is great news…it was ideopathic…so every couple of yrs. I have to have an MRI.
I am glad you are well.
    Namaste,
    Alamar

  • Ms. Behr,

An attitude of thankfulness certainly changed my life. It’s amazing how an emergency can bring the truly important things so quickly into focus, isn’t it?

Both my parents had terminal cancer. I wish you continued recovery, health, and daily joy.

    Regards,

    John

    Alamar,
Thank you for sharing your health journey with me. I can’t imagine being told of a brain tumor, so scary. Even though the doctors tell you that you are well, I’m sure you are still prone to worry. I know I am. That is where prayer comes in. “With God, all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 Blessings for your continued good health, Jeanne

  • Jeanne

    John,
Yes, a crisis will definitely cause all the trivial “stuff” to be put into perspective. I’m sorry that you lost both of your parents to cancer and apparently at a rather young age as well. I thank you for your kind words and I will see you on Blip! Feel free to call me Jeanne, Ms. Behr makes me feel old! ;) ~ Jeanne

  • Thanks, Jeanne.

Since you’re a Christian Romans 8:28 may be appropriate: “We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

    Peace,

    John

  • Jeanne

Thank, you, John! Another verse that I like – “I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13
    Blessings to you, Jeanne
